Cloud Computing

Get a glimpse of IT’s top computing trend that has been making waves in the tech world

Article by Kristine Magadia

Cloud computing is the term often used to describe online computing. In principle, it is the use of a web-based computing technology for various services. One operates a centralized computing infrastructure which can be accessed easily, making it a very efficient way of managing one’s data centre. Thus, over time, more companies have discovered and plunged into using this mechanism in running their businesses.

Cloud computing is usually referred to as software hosted online or more commonly regarded as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). An example of a cloud computing product is the Customer Relationship Management (CRM), which manages your entire customer database online. Other examples would be invoicing, quoting, managing your cash flow, accounting and various online tools to effectively run and manage your business online.

Among the products widely known in the marketplace include SalesForce.com, a company solely based on providing SaaS. Customers of such companies are charged with a subscription fee to be able to have their software hosted on a central server, which they can directly access online. Other products and services include the following: e-Commerce, Intranets, Extranets, Web Applications, eMarketing, and Web Site Design, among others.

Why use SaaS?

  1. Save money – A typical software implementation involves purchasing and maintaining servers, housing them securely, and installing and maintaining the software. Aside from the expenses related to setting up a personal data centre, this set up also requires the time and effort of experienced IT personnel.

However, when you subscribe to a SaaS application, you avoid the overhead costs associated with implementing software on your computer system/network. Companies also tend to incur huge savings as they only pay for what they need since they will only be charged according to their actual usage levels.

  1. Save time – Deployment time tends to be shorter with a SaaS application than a traditional one. This is due to the elimination of many of the typical implementation tasks associated with licensed software and the software already being up and running in a data centre.
  1. Access to the latest innovations – Contrary to a licensed software which requires a user to wait for the next release to get the latest benefits, using SaaS does not demand long waiting time since a user can readily install the update and after that, the latest features will appear in the web site browser.

Going green with the Cloud

Aside from running a business efficiently, cloud computing also helps save the planet. The moment a company shifts its entire infrastructure to cloud, its total energy consumption goes down. Thus, employing this model can serve as an initial step towards lowering emissions which are harmful to the natural environment.

Hence, we can deduce the following thought:

Fewer computers used = lesser coal burnt = lesser total carbon footprint.

Many regard cloud computing as the future of computing. It is then all the more important to make the future of this computing model work for us. Businesses should take advantage of the many benefits cloud computing offers.

As they say, every cloud has a silver lining.

About the Founder

Jason Shico is the founder/CEO of DigiCloud Pty Ltd, a newly launched cloud computing company based in Australia. DigiCloud offers small to midsized businesses with tools to manage their business online. Among the services/products it delivers include online storage and back-up, database design and programming, website design and hosting, online marketing, e-commerce and online software solutions.

DigiCloud goes green!

New Australian cloud computing company further contributes to the saving of the environment.

Article by Kristine Magadia

With regard to the environmental hazards which have increased exponentially over the past years, businesses have been pressured to search for and turn to eco-friendly alternative solutions— an initiative that should have been pursued long before— to deal with what seems to be a no bailout issue.

In an effort to contribute to this cause, many companies have been turning into cloud computing in running their businesses. Cloud computing reduces the bulk of a business’s hardware while providing its data and software as an online service. Online data centres also prove to be more efficient since each server will run more than one data system. By taking a company’s entire infrastructure to cloud instead of running its personal data centre, one does not only cut down its costs but also lower its total carbon emissions.

Lower carbon emissions. This is one of the targets of Digicloud Pty Ltd, a newly launched Australian-based cloud computing company. And it is set to prove that a cloud computing company can further contribute to the saving of the environment.

DigiCloud thinks green

Saving the planet through eco-friendly business initiatives is one of the top concerns of DigiCloud.

“As a start-up cloud computing company with commitment to fulfil our social responsibility, we decided to incorporate green practices to our daily operations. By thinking green, we can be part of the solution, and not the problem,” explains Jason Shico, founder and CEO of DigiCloud.

One ‘go green’ initiative of DigiCloud is to run a paperless office as possible. “We in DigiCloud don’t send out snail mails. All documents such as faxes are sent and received through e-mails,” says Shico. He added that activities such as proofreading and layouting are almost always done on the screen.

By having an electronic document management system, DigiCloud does not only cut down its costs and save office space but it also helps reduce paper consumption, thus becoming a more environmentally responsible company.

Another step towards making the company more eco-friendly is by opting for green office supplies which are recycled, biodegradable, and reusable. It also uses energy efficient equipment and appliances like energy-saving light bulbs.

DigiCloud has also and will continue to participate in various ‘go green’ programs promoted by government and non-government organizations. One is the Earth Hour initiative which runs every last Sunday of March every year. The company has also changed its power usage over to GreenPower accredited renewable energy to support the Australian government’s cause of reducing the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

Doing business and going green can go hand in hand and DigiCloud is set to prove that it is worthy to take initial steps forward –though how small they can be–  towards running successful and power-efficient businesses which do not contribute to the degradation of the environment.

The A-B-C of SEO… and more! – By Jason Shico – 8th March 2010.

The A-B-C of SEO… and more!
By Jason Shico – 8th March 2010.

As many people put it, content is king. And in this day and age of Web 2.0 where Internet is the reservoir of information, having valuable content is very crucial to your website’s success. But how would your website reach new and targeted readers if only a few gets to visit it? This is where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can definitely help you.

SEO is the process of optimizing your website in order to increase the traffic it receives from search engines when a pertinent search is carried out. It seems to be easily done but actually, it is a process that is very difficult to master. Below is a list of the most important SEO techniques that I have acquired over the years with my experience in the World Wide Web.

Meta title tags
Visible to search engines and your website’s visitors, meta title tags are the group of words which appear at the header of your webpage. If written perfectly, these can generate instant traffic to your website.

Example: <meta name="Title" content="DigiCloud Pty Ltd – www.DigiCloud.com.au – Cloud Computing, Web Development, Retail Point of Sale, IT Support Melbourne Australia”>

Meta keywords
Meta keywords are strings of words that describe the topic of a particular webpage. Make sure you find relevant keywords for each pages of your website.

Example: meta name=”keywords” content=”websites, website design, website hosting, it support, it technical support, cloud computing, software as a service, saas, retail point of sale, pos, point of sale”>

Meta description tags
These are composed of no more than 30 words and are displayed as the result snippet when a certain website is shown in search engines like Google. Meta description tags play an important role in page development and thus, they should be appropriate to the page’s content.

Example: meta name=”description” content=”DigiCloud Melbourne based IT Services”>

Title of website
When coming up for a title of your website, make sure that you put keywords in your site’s URL. It should also aptly describe your site so that it will be easily identified by search engines and associate it with your site’s content.

Example:
DigiCloud Pty Ltd – www.DigiCloud.com.au – Cloud Computing, Web Development, Retail Point Of Sale, IT Support, Melbourne Australia, Onsite Technical Support Australia Wide, SaaS, Software As A Service, POS Systems, Computer Hardware Supply / Repair

Footer links
Having products/services listed at the footer of your website is one way to maximize your SEO campaign. You can direct the visitors to the pages showing the products/services that you offer- thereby promoting them- using your main keywords (which they used to find your site) in the footer.

For example;
Cloud Services / Products
Web Services
Retail Point Of Sale Services
Help Desk Services

Google
Google is regarded as the number one search engine in the world. Most websites acquire their search engine traffic from searches in Google. The following is a list of their services that you can tap:

1. Google Webmaster Tools
With Google webmaster tools (www.google.com/webmasters/tools), you can understand how your website is indexed by Google, know the latest tools to better understand your website traffic details, and share information regarding your website.

2. Google Analytics
Google Analytics (www.google.com/analytics) provides you information regarding the visitors of your website.

3. Google Search Tools
By keying in your website’s name or your main keywords, Google Search Tools (www.googlekeywordtool.com) generate a list of new keyword ideas you can use.

4. Google Business Directory Advert Submit
Google continuously adds and updates new websites to their index every time they crawl the web and thus, submitting your website’s URL to Google is highly encouraged. (www.google.com/addurl/)

5. Google Adwords
A good complement to your SEO campaign, Google Adwords (www.adwords.google.com) allows your text ads to show up when a user performs a web search query using your desired keywords.

Sitemap
A site map serves as the directory of your web pages. It does not only help the visitors of your site to look for the pages of the content they are searching for but it is also used by search engines to know more about your site and follow your page links. Among the free sitemap tools you can use is www.xml-sitemaps.com.

Free business listing sites
Another option is to have your ad with your products/services submitted to free business listing sites such as www.livepages.com.au, www.yellowpages.com.au, www.mmv.vic.gov.au, www.hotfrog.com.au, www.melbourneexchange.com.au, and www.bigroo.com. Your potential customers can easily find your listing by looking in the business listing websites’ directories.

Social networking sites
Being an active member of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn can help increase your online popularity and consequently, drive traffic to your site. Certainly, these sites can not only help you find your classmate 10 years ago; it can also help you interact with potential customers.

For example;
Facebook , Twitter , LinkedIn , WordPress

Free websites
One other technique is to create and setup a free website over at www.Webs.com and www.weebly.com . Copy the contents of one to two pages of your website and paste it in the front page of your Webs website. Do not forget to also put links of your original website’s URL in various parts of the pages of your Webs website.

Press release
Press releases can be used as an efficient technique to get links from other websites, especially when you are able to develop a good relationship with the media. Moreover, when you submit your PRs online, you get to improve your online visibility, more importantly, in news search sites.

Links, links, links
By finding websites related to your site’s niche and exchanging links with them effectively, you can see a jump in hits to your website. Make sure you do not include broken links into your site.

A good SEO campaign cannot be learned and executed overnight. Knowing how to effectively employ this marketing strategy is indeed a tedious yet rewarding process that can make your online business stand out and succeed.

DigiCloud launches a new online store in Australia > http://Shop.DigiCloud.com.au

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FAIRFIELD, Melbourne Australia – October 2011 – Whilst Australia is set to spend over 50 billion dollars over the next 5 years with online shopping, we thought it would be only logical to launch our new online store and offer great specials to benefit our customers.

We thought we would take a new approach to online stores and focus on releasing weekly specials such as Notebooks, Computers, Desktops, Tablets, Printers & Software, and not clog the site with products that never really take off or have any relevance to our customer base.

With our core business being Point Of Sale for single store and multi store operators in Retail & Hospitality we will be focusing on our best selling products and again not clogging the store with too much variety, but putting emphasis on what we know is best and working with brand names we trust and know, such as HP, Epson, Motorola & Zebra.

After many enquiries from Government & education agencies we have also decided to open our services in the realm of Mobile App Development for the big mobile operating systems such as iOS, Android and Windows Mobile.

Among the services/products we will deliver include Website design & development, website hosting, SEO & SEM.
